Judah
JOO-duh · from Yehudah · means “Praise”
Judah means "praise" and belongs to the fourth son of Jacob, whose descendants became one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Judah's tribe carried the promise of kingship, and generations later, Jesus Himself is called the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the ultimate fulfillment of that ancient blessing.
“Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals."”
The story behind the name
Judah was born to Jacob and Leah, one of twelve brothers whose complicated, often painful family story fills much of Genesis. It was Judah who suggested selling Joseph rather than killing him (Genesis 37:26-27), a decision born of self-interest that God still wove into a larger plan of rescue.
Years later, Judah proved he had changed. When famine forced the brothers back to Egypt and Joseph's youngest brother Benjamin was threatened, Judah offered himself as a slave in Benjamin's place, unwilling to let his father lose another son (Genesis 44:33). It was a costly, selfless offer that revealed a transformed heart.
Jacob's dying blessing over Judah promised that the scepter would not depart from his line "until he to whom it belongs shall come" (Genesis 49:10), a promise that stretched forward through King David and finally to Jesus, revealed in Revelation as "the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David" (Revelation 5:5). A son named Judah carries a name of praise and a promise that reaches all the way to Christ.
A blessing to pray over Judah
Lord, let this son's life be marked by praise, and let his heart grow into the selfless courage Judah showed for his brother. May he always find his strength in the Lion of Judah. Amen.
