Luke
LOOK · from Lucas · means “Light-giving (traditional, debated); possibly 'from Lucania'”
Luke derives from the Latin Lucas or Lucanus, traditionally associated with light though the connection is debated by scholars; it may instead mean "from Lucania." Luke was a physician who traveled with Paul and is traditionally identified as the author of the Gospel of Luke and Acts.
“Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings.”
The story behind the name
Paul calls him "our dear friend Luke, the doctor" (Colossians 4:14), and Luke's careful, orderly writing shows the mind of someone trained to observe closely. He opens his Gospel by explaining that he investigated everything carefully from the beginning so that Theophilus could know the certainty of what he had been taught (Luke 1:1-4).
Luke stayed near Paul through hardship, including his final imprisonment, when Paul wrote, "Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11). He is traditionally credited with writing both the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts, giving Scripture its fullest account of Jesus' life and the early church's growth.
A boy named Luke carries the legacy of a careful, faithful historian, a physician who tended both bodies and souls, and a friend who stayed present when others had gone.
A blessing to pray over Luke
Lord, give this son the careful, faithful heart of Luke, attentive to truth and steady in friendship. May he stay near to You and near to those who need him. Amen.
