Levi
LEE-vye · from Levi · means “Joined, attached”
Levi is a Hebrew name meaning "joined" or "attached," spoken by his mother Leah in hope that her husband Jacob would finally be attached to her. Levi became the ancestor of Israel's priestly tribe, the Levites, who were set apart to serve in the tabernacle and temple.
“I will give the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons. They are the Israelites who are given wholly to me.”
The story behind the name
Levi was the third son born to Jacob and Leah, and his mother named him hoping her husband would at last be joined to her in love (Genesis 29:34). As a young man, Levi acted with harsh violence alongside his brother Simeon in Shechem, a moment their father Jacob later rebuked (Genesis 34, 49).
Yet generations later, Levi's descendants became the priestly tribe of Israel, set apart from the other tribes to care for the tabernacle, offer sacrifices, and teach God's law to the people. They received no land inheritance because the Lord himself was their inheritance (Numbers 18:20).
A boy named Levi carries a name of being joined and set apart, a reminder that God can take even a flawed beginning and shape a family for lasting service to Him.
A blessing to pray over Levi
Lord, set this son apart for Your purposes like the tribe of Levi, joined closely to You and to the people he loves. Let his life be one of quiet, faithful service. Amen.
