Lucas
LOO-kus · from Loukas · means “Light-giving, from Lucania”
Lucas means "light-giving" and is the fuller form of Luke, from the Greek Loukas. Lucas appears in the New Testament itself, naming the physician and companion of Paul traditionally credited with writing the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts (Colossians 4:14).
“Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.”
The story behind the name
Lucas has become one of the most popular boys' names across the Western world in the twenty-first century, admired for its warm sound and genuine roots in Scripture.
Luke was a physician by training and a Gentile, a careful historian who set out, as he wrote, "to write an orderly account" of everything concerning Jesus, having "carefully investigated everything from the beginning" (Luke 1:1-3). His Gospel gives special attention to the poor, to women, and to outsiders welcomed into God's story.
Luke also stayed loyally at Paul's side through hardship, including his final imprisonment, when Paul wrote that "only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11). A boy named Lucas carries the legacy of a careful, faithful companion who told the story of Jesus with unusual warmth and precision.
A blessing to pray over Lucas
