Joaquin

wah-KEEN · means Established by Yahweh

Joaquin is the Spanish form of Joachim, itself a variant of Jehoiachin, a king of Judah also called Jeconiah in Scripture, meaning "established by Yahweh" (2 Kings 24:6, Matthew 1:11). It is not a name most readers will recognize from a Bible index, and the king behind it had a troubled, mostly tragic reign, but the meaning of the name itself remains a real statement of God's steadying hand.

So Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king's table.
2 Kings 25:29 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Joaquin has long been common across Spain and Latin America, and it has grown noticeably more popular in the United States in recent years, chosen largely for its strong sound rather than its more obscure biblical root.

Jehoiachin became king of Judah at only eighteen, during the final collapse of the kingdom before the Babylonian exile, and reigned just three months before Nebuchadnezzar carried him off to Babylon (2 Kings 24:8-15). Matthew's genealogy still lists him, under the name Jeconiah, in the line leading to Jesus (Matthew 1:11-12).

Even after decades in a Babylonian prison, 2 Kings closes with a small note of grace: a new king released Jehoiachin, seated him above other captive kings, and gave him a regular place at the royal table for the rest of his life (2 Kings 25:27-30). A son named Joaquin carries a name meaning God establishes, drawn from a king whose story ends, quietly, in mercy rather than ruin.

A blessing to pray over Joaquin

Lord, establish this son's life on You alone. Whatever seasons of hardship come, bring him, like Jehoiachin, to a place of unexpected mercy and rest. Amen.
