Mara

MAH-ruh · means Bitter

Mara is a genuine biblical word, the name Naomi gave herself in Ruth 1:20, meaning "bitter," after losing her husband and both her sons. Though it began as a cry of grief, Naomi's story does not end there, and the name has come to carry both honesty about sorrow and hope for what God can still do with it.

Naomi had a relative on her husband's side, a man of standing, whose name was Boaz.
Ruth 2:1 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Mara has stayed a rare choice for parents, drawn to its short, striking sound and to the honesty of its meaning, a name that does not pretend hard seasons never happen.

Naomi returned to Bethlehem after losing her husband and both her sons in Moab, and told the women there, "Don't call me Naomi. Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter" (Ruth 1:20). Her grief was real, and Scripture never rushes past it.

But Naomi's story turns. Her daughter-in-law Ruth stayed faithfully by her side, married Boaz, and gave birth to Obed, grandfather of David and ancestor of Christ himself (Ruth 4:13-17). The women of Bethlehem later said a redeemer had been born to Naomi after all. A daughter named Mara carries the full honesty of bitterness turned, in God's hands, into unexpected joy.

A blessing to pray over Mara

Lord, You alone can take what feels bitter and turn it toward joy. Meet this daughter in her hardest seasons, and write a redemption story into her life like You did for Naomi. Amen.
