Mariana
mahr-ee-AH-nuh · means “Beloved, and grace”
Mariana blends Maria and Anna, drawing on Mary, the mother of Jesus, and on Hannah or Anna, both associated with grace and answered prayer. It is not itself a name in Scripture, but it carries forward two of the New Testament's most faithful women in a single name.
“"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled."”
The story behind the name
Mariana has long been common across Spain, Italy, and Latin America, and it has grown gradually more familiar in the United States, valued for its rhythmic sound and dual roots.
Mary was a young woman in Nazareth when the angel Gabriel told her she would carry the Son of God, and she answered simply, "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled" (Luke 1:38). She went on to raise Jesus and stood by Him even at the cross.
Anna the prophetess, whose name shares its root with Hannah, spent her long widowhood worshiping in the temple, and was given the honor of recognizing the infant Jesus and speaking of Him to others (Luke 2:36-38). A daughter named Mariana carries both threads together, humble trust and faithful, longstanding devotion.
A blessing to pray over Mariana
Lord, give this daughter Mary's humble trust and Anna's patient devotion. Let her whole life be shaped by grace received and grace given back to You. Amen.
