Jack

JAK · means God is gracious

Jack means "God is gracious." It began centuries ago as an English pet form of John, itself from the Hebrew Yochanan. Jack is not a name found in Scripture, but it carries forward the meaning and legacy of John the Baptist and John the Apostle, two of the New Testament's most important figures.

But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John."
Luke 1:13 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Jack has been one of the most beloved names in the English-speaking world for centuries, moving from a nickname for John into a fully independent name in its own right, and it remains a top choice in the United States, the United Kingdom, and beyond.

The John behind it was announced by an angel to the aging priest Zechariah, whose wife Elizabeth had long been childless. "Your prayer has been heard," the angel said. "You are to call him John" (Luke 1:13). That John grew up to prepare the way for Jesus, baptizing in the Jordan and calling the nation to repentance.

Another John, one of the twelve apostles, walked closely with Jesus and later wrote a Gospel and three letters overflowing with the theme of love. He described himself simply as the disciple "whom Jesus loved" (John 21:20). A boy named Jack carries the grace both Johns pointed to their whole lives.

A blessing to pray over Jack

Lord, let this son's life be marked by the grace his name declares. Give him John's boldness to prepare the way for You and John's tender love for those around him. Amen.
