Pedro

PAY-dro · from Petros · means Rock

Pedro is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Peter, meaning "rock," from the Greek Petros. It derives directly from Simon Peter, the impulsive fisherman Jesus renamed and built His church upon, one of the most prominent leaders among the twelve apostles.

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Matthew 16:18 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Pedro has been widely used across the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world for centuries and has grown steadily familiar in the United States, valued for its strong, grounded sound.

Simon was a working fisherman when Jesus called him, and Jesus gave him a new name on the spot: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18). Peter was often impulsive, walking on water toward Jesus one moment and sinking in fear the next, and denying Christ three times the very night He was arrested.

Yet after the resurrection, Jesus restored Peter personally by the shore, asking three times, "Do you love me?" and commissioning him three times to "feed my sheep" (John 21:15-17). Peter went on to lead the early church boldly at Pentecost and beyond. A boy named Pedro carries the story of a flawed man made into a foundation.

A blessing to pray over Pedro

Father, take this son's failures as You took Peter's and build something strong and lasting from them. Give him courage to lead and grace to be restored when he stumbles. Amen.
