Steven

STEE-vun · from Stephanos · means Crown

Steven is a common spelling variant of Stephen, meaning "crown," from the Greek Stephanos. It derives directly from Stephen in the book of Acts, the church's first deacon and its first martyr, stoned to death for boldly preaching Christ.

Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep.
Acts 7:60 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Steven became enormously popular across the United States and Britain in the mid-twentieth century, and though it has cooled somewhat, it remains a familiar, well-loved classic.

Stephen was chosen as one of the early church's first deacons, a man "full of faith and of the Holy Spirit" who served the needy and performed great wonders among the people (Acts 6:5-8). When religious leaders dragged him before the council, his face reportedly looked "like the face of an angel" (Acts 6:15).

Stephen preached boldly about Jesus even as the crowd turned violent, and as they stoned him, he prayed, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them," echoing Christ's own words from the cross (Acts 7:59-60). A boy named Steven carries the legacy of a man whose faith did not waver even facing death.

A blessing to pray over Steven
