Stefan

STEH-fahn · from Stephanos · means Crown

Stefan is a European form of Stephen, meaning "crown," from the Greek Stephanos. Like Steven, it derives directly from Stephen in Acts, a deacon full of the Holy Spirit who became the first Christian martyr after boldly proclaiming Christ before a hostile council.

But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
Acts 7:55 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Stefan has long been common across Germany, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe, and it has grown in gentle use in the United States as families look toward European and biblically rooted names.

Stephen served the early Jerusalem church at a moment of rapid growth and real tension, appointed to make sure needy widows were fairly cared for so the apostles could focus on preaching (Acts 6:1-6). He carried out that quiet, practical work while also becoming known for signs and wonders.

Brought before the Sanhedrin on false charges, Stephen delivered a long, fearless retelling of Israel's history that ended in his own death by stoning, with Saul of Tarsus, later the apostle Paul, watching nearby (Acts 7:58). A boy named Stefan carries a name of grace-filled courage that helped shape the church's future in ways its bearer never saw.

A blessing to pray over Stefan

Father, fill this son with Your Spirit as You filled Stephen, and let him see Your glory clearly even in hard and uncertain moments. Amen.
