Thaddaeus
thuh-DEE-us · means “courageous heart or beloved”
Thaddaeus is an Aramaic name traditionally understood as courageous heart or beloved. Mentioned in the Gospels as one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus, he followed Christ closely, witnessing His ministry, death, and resurrection. His name represents a legacy of quiet devotion and apostolic courage.
“These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;”
The story behind the name
Thaddaeus was chosen by Jesus to be part of the inner circle of disciples who traveled with Him. He is also identified in the Gospels as Judas son of James, but is called Thaddaeus to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot. He lived in close fellowship with Jesus, learning His teachings firsthand.
During the Last Supper, Thaddaeus asked Jesus a profound question about how He would manifest Himself to His followers and not to the world. Jesus responded by explaining that those who love Him will keep His word, and the Father will love them. This interaction highlighted his desire for a personal, spiritual understanding of Christ.
Following the resurrection and Pentecost, Thaddaeus traveled extensively to preach the gospel, traditionally ministering in Syria and Persia. He remained faithful to his calling, eventually giving his life for the sake of Christ. A boy named Thaddaeus is inspired to follow Jesus with an undivided, courageous heart.
