Bartholomew

bar-THOL-uh-myoo · means Son of furrows

Bartholomew is an Aramaic name meaning son of furrows or son of Tolmai. In the New Testament, he was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, widely believed to be the same disciple named Nathanael. His name represents a life of direct encounter with Jesus Christ, apostolic zeal, and missionary courage.

When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, 'Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.'
John 1:47 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Bartholomew is listed among the twelve apostles in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, as well as in the Book of Acts. Because he is always paired with Philip in these lists, church tradition identifies him as Nathanael, whom Philip brought to Jesus. Under the name Nathanael, Jesus described him as a true Israelite in whom there was no deceit.

When Nathanael first questioned if anything good could come from Nazareth, Philip simply invited him to come and see. Jesus revealed His divinity by telling Nathanael that He saw him sitting under a fig tree before Philip called him. This personal revelation led him to declare Jesus as the Son of God and the King of Israel.

After the resurrection, Bartholomew was among the disciples who witnessed Jesus at the Sea of Galilee. Historical traditions state that he traveled extensively to spread the gospel, preaching in India and Armenia where he ultimately gave his life for his faith. A boy named Bartholomew carries a legacy of honesty, deep faith, and ultimate devotion.
