Thomas

TOM-us · from Te'oma · means Twin

Thomas comes from the Aramaic Te'oma, meaning "twin," rendered in Greek as Didymus (John 11:16). Best known as "doubting Thomas" for questioning the resurrection, he is also remembered for one of the clearest declarations of Jesus' divinity found anywhere in Scripture.

Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
John 20:28 (NIV)

The story behind the name

When Jesus decided to return to Judea despite threats on His life, it was Thomas who said, "Let us also go, that we may die with him" (John 11:16), showing a loyal courage often overlooked because of his later doubt.

After the resurrection, Thomas refused to believe without seeing the wounds himself: "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, I will not believe" (John 20:25). A week later Jesus appeared and invited Thomas to touch His hands and side.

Thomas's response is one of the highest confessions in the Gospels: "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28). A boy named Thomas carries a name that means twin, and a story that shows honest doubt can lead to the deepest worship.

A blessing to pray over Thomas

Lord, meet this son in his questions like You met Thomas, and turn every honest doubt into deeper worship. May his faith one day declare, my Lord and my God. Amen.
