Yael
yah-EL · means “Mountain goat, or strength”
Yael is the Hebrew form and original spelling of Jael, meaning "mountain goat," a name often connected to strength and sure-footedness. Jael appears in Judges 4-5 as the woman who killed the enemy commander Sisera, helping secure Israel's deliverance during the days of the judge and prophetess Deborah.
“"Most blessed of women is Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, most blessed of tent-dwelling women."”
The story behind the name
Yael has become a popular modern name in Israel and among English-speaking families drawn to its strong meaning and its direct tie to one of Scripture's boldest women, often chosen today simply as the more traditional Hebrew spelling of Jael.
Jael was a Kenite woman whose tent Sisera fled to after his army's defeat, expecting safety. Instead, Jael offered him milk and a place to rest, then, once he slept, drove a tent peg through his temple, ending the threat he posed to Israel (Judges 4:17-21).
Deborah's victory song afterward calls Jael "most blessed of women," honoring her decisive courage at a critical moment (Judges 5:24). A daughter named Yael carries the legacy of a woman who acted with clear-eyed bravery when it mattered most.
A blessing to pray over Yael
Lord, give this daughter Jael's clear courage, steady and decisive when the moment calls for it. Make her a woman others remember as blessed and brave. Amen.
