Azaria

az-uh-RY-uh · means The Lord has helped

Azaria is a feminine form of Azariah, meaning "the LORD has helped." It is not itself the exact form found in most Bible translations, but it is drawn directly from Azariah, a name carried by several men in Scripture, including one of Daniel's three companions in Babylon, better known by his Babylonian name, Abednego.

So these men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace... and not a hair of their heads was singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
Daniel 3:23-27 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Azaria has grown gradually more familiar in the United States in recent years, chosen by families drawn to its rhythm and its clear meaning, a name that speaks directly of God's help.

Azariah, along with Daniel, Hananiah, and Mishael, was taken to Babylon as a young man and given a new name, Abednego. When ordered to bow to a golden statue, Azariah refused, along with his friends, even facing a blazing furnace rather than deny God (Daniel 3:16-18).

God met them in the fire itself, and all three walked out unharmed, without so much as the smell of smoke on them (Daniel 3:27). A daughter named Azaria carries the legacy of that same steady help, God present even in the hottest furnace.

A blessing to pray over Azaria

Lord, be this daughter's help in every furnace she faces. Give her Azariah's steady courage to stand firm no matter what surrounds her. Amen.
