Nathanael

nuh-THAN-ee-uhl · from Netan'el · means Gift of God; God has given

Nathanael comes from the Hebrew Netan'el, meaning "gift of God" or "God has given." Often identified with the apostle Bartholomew, Nathanael was skeptical when first told about Jesus, yet Jesus called him a man "in whom there is no deceit," and Nathanael quickly believed.

When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit."
John 1:47 (NIV)

The story behind the name

When Philip told Nathanael they had found the Messiah in Jesus of Nazareth, Nathanael answered bluntly, "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Philip did not argue, only said, "Come and see" (John 1:45-46).

As Nathanael approached, Jesus said of him, "Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit" (John 1:47), startling Nathanael, who had said nothing about himself yet. Jesus revealed He had already seen him under a fig tree, and Nathanael's skepticism turned instantly to worship: "Rabbi, you are the Son of God."

A boy named Nathanael carries a name that means gift of God, and a story that shows honest questions, brought honestly to Jesus, can lead to swift and genuine faith.

A blessing to pray over Nathanael

Lord, may this son be known for honesty like Nathanael, free of deceit and quick to believe once he truly sees You. Let his questions lead him always closer to Christ. Amen.
