Bethuel is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as meaning "man of God" or "dwelling of God." He was Abraham's nephew and the father of Rebekah. His name stands for a life that is built around a relationship with the Lord and aligned with His divine will.
“Laban and Bethuel answered, 'This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other.'”
The story behind the name
Bethuel was the son of Nahor and Milcah, and he lived in the region of Paddan Aram (Genesis 22). He is most famously known as the father of Rebekah and Laban, playing a quiet but crucial role in the lineage of the patriarchs. When Abraham's servant came seeking a wife for Isaac, Bethuel welcomed him into his home.
Upon hearing how God had clearly guided the servant to Rebekah, Bethuel recognized the Lord's hand in the matter. Along with his son Laban, Bethuel declared that the marriage proposal was from the Lord and agreed to let Rebekah go. His willingness to submit to God's plan allowed the covenant lineage to continue.
