Nahor
NAY-hor · means “Breathing”
Nahor is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as meaning "breathing" or "snorting." It was borne by both the grandfather and the brother of Abraham. The name represents a life-giving breath and the vital family line from which Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah would later emerge to build Israel.
“After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.”
The story behind the name
Nahor was the son of Terah and the brother of Abraham and Haran (Genesis 11). While Abraham was called to journey to Canaan, Nahor settled in Haran, establishing a household that remained closely connected to Abraham's family. His home became a vital link for the patriarchs when seeking wives of shared faith.
Through his wife Milcah, Nahor became the father of eight sons, including Bethuel, who was the father of Rebekah (Genesis 22). Decades later, Abraham sent his servant back to Nahor's town to find a wife for Isaac, leading to the selection of Rebekah. This family line preserved the kinship that shaped the early covenant people.
A boy named Nahor carries a name associated with family legacy, breathing life, and the quiet fulfillment of God's plans. It reminds parents that God works through relatives and communities to bring about His purposes. Naming a child Nahor celebrates the breath of life God gives to each child.
