Cleopas

KLEE-oh-pus · means Glory of the father

Cleopas is a Greek name meaning 'glory of the father.' In the New Testament, Cleopas is one of the two disciples who walked with the risen Christ on the road to Emmaus. His story captures a beautiful moment of grief turning into joy when his eyes were opened in the breaking of bread.

One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, 'Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?'
Luke 24:18 (NIV)

The story behind the name

On the day of the resurrection, Cleopas and another disciple were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, discussing the tragic crucifixion of Jesus. They were joined by a traveler whom they did not recognize, who asked about their sorrow. Cleopas expressed his confusion, wondering how anyone in Jerusalem could be unaware of the recent events.

As they walked, the unrecognized Jesus explained how the Scriptures pointed to the Messiah's suffering and glory. Cleopas and his companion listened intently, their hearts burning within them as he opened the Word. When they approached the village, they urged him to stay with them for the evening.

At the table, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. In that instant, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him before He vanished. Cleopas immediately rushed back to Jerusalem to share the joyful news with the other apostles.
