Enoch
EE-nuhk · from Chanokh · means “Dedicated, initiated”
Enoch is a Hebrew name meaning "dedicated" or "initiated." He is famous for one astonishing line in Genesis: he walked faithfully with God, and then he was no more, because God took him. Enoch never experienced death, a picture of walking so closely with God that heaven simply followed.
“Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.”
The story behind the name
Enoch appears in the long genealogy of Genesis 5, a list mostly marked by the repeated phrase "and then he died." Enoch breaks the pattern entirely. Twice we are told he walked faithfully with God, a description given to almost no one else in Scripture.
At 365 years old, Enoch simply vanished from the earth, because God took him. There was no death, no burial, only a life so joined to God that it continued straight into His presence.
Hebrews confirms that Enoch pleased God by faith before he was taken (Hebrews 11:5). A boy named Enoch carries a name for quiet, daily devotion, the kind that walks with God so closely that nothing else compares.
A blessing to pray over Enoch
Father, may this son walk with You so closely, day by day, that his whole life becomes a testimony of faith. Draw him ever nearer to Your presence. Amen.
