Noah
NOH-uh · from Noach · means “Rest, comfort”
Noah is a Hebrew name meaning "rest" or "comfort." Noah found favor with God in a corrupt generation, built the ark by faith, and carried God's promise of a new beginning through the flood. The rainbow covenant that follows his story is Scripture's first great sign of hope.
“But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.”
The story behind the name
When Noah was born, his father Lamech said, "He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands" (Genesis 5:29). His name carried a hope for rest in a weary world.
Genesis says Noah was a righteous man who walked faithfully with God, and that he found favor in the eyes of the Lord (Genesis 6). By faith he built an ark for a flood no one had seen, obedient through what must have been years of ridicule. Hebrews 11 honors him among the great examples of faith.
After the flood, God set His rainbow in the clouds as a covenant of mercy with every generation to come. A boy named Noah carries that whole story: quiet obedience, patient faith, and a God who keeps His promises.
A blessing to pray over Noah
Father, may this son walk faithfully with You like Noah, obedient even when no one else understands, and may his life be a place of rest and comfort for the people around him. Amen.
