Gershon
GER-shun · from Gershon · means “Exile, stranger”
Gershon is a Hebrew name meaning "exile" or "stranger." He was the firstborn son of Levi and the founder of the Gershonite clan of Levites, who were entrusted with transporting the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, and hangings. His name represents holy stewardship and finding our true home in God.
“At the tent of meeting the Gershonites were responsible for the care of the tabernacle and tent, its coverings, the curtain at the entrance to the tent of meeting”
The story behind the name
Gershon was born in Canaan and went down to Egypt with his grandfather Jacob and the rest of the family during the great famine. He witnessed the growth of his clan and the preservation of his family under Joseph's care. His descendants were later separated by God for a special holy purpose.
In the wilderness, Gershon's family was assigned to camp on the west side of the tabernacle. Their specific holy duty was to care for the curtains, the tent coverings, the hangings of the courtyard, and all the ropes. They carried these sacred items with reverence and care whenever the camp set out.
A boy named Gershon carries a name that reminds us we are pilgrims on this earth, searching for our eternal home in God. His legacy teaches that even the practical tasks of caring for fabrics and doors are sacred when done for the Lord. He is called to a life of stewardship and faith.
