Kohath

KOH-hath · from Qehat · means Assembly, congregation

Kohath is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as meaning "assembly" or "congregation." As the second son of Levi, he was the ancestor of Moses, Aaron, and the Kohathite clan, who carried the most sacred objects of the tabernacle, including the Ark of the Covenant. His name represents holiness and leadership.

But the Kohathites must not touch the holy things or they will die. These are the things in the tent of meeting that the Kohathites are to carry.
Numbers 4:15 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Kohath migrated to Egypt with the family of Jacob, where his descendants eventually grew into a prominent Levite division. His family line was highly honored, producing the high priests of Israel and the leaders who guided the nation out of slavery. The Kohathites camped on the south side of the tabernacle.

During the wilderness journey, the Kohathites were given the responsibility of carrying the most sacred furniture of the sanctuary on their shoulders. They transported the Ark of the Covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, and the altars after the priests covered them. This duty required absolute holiness and careful physical devotion.

A boy named Kohath carries a legacy of leadership, proximity to God's presence, and handling holy things with care. His name points to the gathering of God's people for worship and instruction. He is encouraged to live a life that honors God's presence and gathers others in unity.
