Hobab
HOH-bab · means “Beloved”
Hobab is a Hebrew name meaning beloved or cherished. As Moses' brother-in-law, he was invited to guide Israel through the wilderness and share in their blessings. His story is a beautiful testament to choosing a path of faith and finding a home among God's covenant people.
“Now Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, 'We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, "I will give it to you." Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.'”
The story behind the name
Hobab was the son of Reuel the Midianite and is identified in Scripture as Moses' brother-in-law. When Israel was preparing to journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land, Moses invited Hobab to travel with them. Moses valued Hobab's knowledge of the wilderness and his companionship on the difficult road ahead.
Although Hobab initially hesitated, preferring to return to his own land and family, Moses urged him to come and serve as their eyes in the desert. Moses promised that Hobab would share in whatever good things the Lord gave to Israel. Hobab agreed to accompany them, choosing to align his destiny with God's covenant people.
His descendants, the Kenites, later settled in the Promised Land and enjoyed the blessing of inheritance alongside Israel. His choice to walk with God's people in the desert led to lasting generational blessings for his family. A boy named Hobab carries a legacy of guidance, cooperation, and walking in faith.
