Jedidiah

jed-ih-DY-uh · means beloved of Yahweh

Jedidiah is a Hebrew name meaning beloved of Yahweh. It was the special name given by God through the prophet Nathan to the newborn Solomon, as a sign of divine favor, grace, and reconciliation after a season of brokenness. It represents a life surrounded by God's love.

and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.
2 Samuel 12:25 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Jedidiah is introduced in the second book of Samuel, immediately following the birth of Solomon to David and Bathsheba. After a period of intense grief and national turmoil, this name brought a message of hope and restoration. It was a clear declaration that God loved the child and had pardoned the house of David.

The name was sent specifically through the prophet Nathan, who had previously confronted David. By sending Nathan to name the child Jedidiah, God showed that His relationship with David was restored. This name was a promise of future peace and blessing for the kingdom of Israel.

Although the child would grow up to be known historically as Solomon, the name Jedidiah remained a testament to his spiritual identity. It reminds us that before we achieve anything, our primary identity is being loved by God. A boy named Jedidiah is reminded of his place in the Father's heart.
