Nathan
NAY-thuhn · from Natan · means “He gave, gift”
Nathan is a Hebrew name meaning "he gave" or "gift." As court prophet under King David, Nathan delivered God's covenant promise of an eternal throne and later confronted David's sin with the parable of the ewe lamb. His courage to speak truth to a king remains one of Scripture's most striking examples of honest confrontation done in love.
“Then Nathan said to David, "You are that man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says."”
The story behind the name
Nathan first appears delivering remarkable news to David: God would build David a house, establishing his throne forever through his offspring (2 Samuel 7). It is one of the central covenant promises of the Old Testament, pointing ahead to Christ.
Later, after David's sin with Bathsheba, Nathan returned with a different word. He told a story of a rich man who stole a poor man's only lamb, and when David's anger flared, Nathan said simply, "You are that man" (2 Samuel 12:7). David repented, and Psalm 51 is traditionally linked to that moment.
Nathan risked his life to speak truth to a king he served, choosing faithfulness to God over comfortable silence. A boy named Nathan carries a name for honest courage, the kind that can both deliver good news and speak hard truth in love.
A blessing to pray over Nathan
Lord, give this son the courage of Nathan, willing to speak the truth in love even when it costs him, and a heart that treasures Your promises above comfort. Amen.
