Jehoshaphat
jeh-HOSH-uh-fat · from Yehoshafat · means “The Lord judges”
Jehoshaphat is a Hebrew name meaning "the Lord judges." He was a righteous king of Judah who removed idols, sent teachers to instruct the people in the Scriptures, and famously won a battle through worship. His name is a testament to the justice and protection of God.
“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
The story behind the name
Jehoshaphat walked in the ways of his ancestor David, making the worship of Yahweh the foundation of his kingdom. He established judges throughout Judah, instructing them to judge not for man but for the Lord, who is with them in their decisions. He also sent officials and Levites to teach the Book of the Law in every town.
When a massive alliance of enemy armies marched against Judah, Jehoshaphat did not panic but gathered the nation to fast and pray. Standing before the assembly, he confessed their weakness and declared that their eyes were on God. God answered by telling them the battle belonged to Him, not to them.
Jehoshaphat responded by placing a choir of worshippers at the head of the army to praise God's enduring love. As they sang, the Lord set ambushes against the enemies, and they were completely defeated without Judah fighting. A boy named Jehoshaphat carries a legacy of judicial integrity, prayer in crisis, and worship that defeats fear.
