Jessie

JESS-ee · means Gift, or the Lord exists

Jessie is a feminine diminutive of Jesse, whose Hebrew meaning is usually given as "gift" or "the Lord exists." It is not itself a scriptural name, but it comes straight from Jesse, the Bethlehem farmer whose youngest son David became Israel's greatest king, and whose line led all the way to Jesus.

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit.
Isaiah 11:1 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Jessie has been used as both an independent name and a nickname for names like Jessica across the English-speaking world for well over a century, prized for its plain, friendly warmth.

Jesse appears mostly in the background of Scripture, a farmer in Bethlehem with eight sons, the youngest of whom, David, seemed so unlikely a choice that Jesse did not even call him in from the fields at first when Samuel came looking for a king (1 Samuel 16:11).

Centuries later, Isaiah promised that a shoot would come up "from the stump of Jesse," a branch bearing fruit, a promise the New Testament identifies with Jesus Himself (Isaiah 11:1, Romans 15:12). A daughter named Jessie carries the name of an ordinary man whose family line became the root of the whole world's hope.

A blessing to pray over Jessie

Lord, let this daughter's life bear good fruit just as the promise to Jesse did. Root her deeply in You, and let hope grow from everything she touches. Amen.
