Joash
JOH-ash · means “Yahweh has given”
Joash is a Hebrew name meaning Yahweh has given. In the Bible, Joash was the boy king of Judah who was rescued as an infant and raised in the temple. He led a significant spiritual revival, restoring the temple and renewing the people's devotion to God.
“Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him.”
The story behind the name
Joash's life began in extreme danger when his grandmother Athaliah attempted to destroy the entire royal family to seize the throne. He was rescued as a baby by his aunt Jehosheba and hidden in the temple for six years. During this time, the high priest Jehoiada protected him and prepared him for his calling.
At the age of seven, Joash was brought out of hiding and crowned king, bringing an end to Athaliah's reign. Under Jehoiada's guidance, Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, rebuilding the damaged temple. He organized a system for collecting offerings to fund the restoration work.
His early reign stands as a beautiful example of how God preserves His promises and uses the young to accomplish His work. Joash's story emphasizes the importance of godly mentors who guide us in faith. A boy named Joash inherits a legacy of preservation, renewal, and temple service.
