Matthias
muh-THY-us · means “Gift of God”
Matthias is a Greek name meaning gift of God. In the New Testament, he was the disciple chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot as one of the twelve apostles. His name represents a story of quiet faithfulness, sudden recognition, and dedicated service to the risen Lord Jesus.
“Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.”
The story behind the name
Matthias had followed Jesus throughout His entire earthly ministry, starting from John's baptism until the ascension. Although he worked quietly in the background without being named in the Gospels, he was a witness to Jesus' miracles and resurrection. When the apostles sought to fill the vacancy left by Judas, Matthias was one of two men nominated (Acts 1).
The apostles prayed for guidance, asking God to show which of the two nominees He had chosen. They cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias, adding him to the eleven apostles. This method of selection showed that his appointment was directed by God rather than human preference.
Following his selection, he served faithfully as an apostle, sharing the gospel and establishing the early church. Church tradition states that he preached in various regions and faced martyrdom for his testimony. A boy named Matthias carries a name of honor, showing that God sees and rewards quiet faithfulness.
