Uzziah
uh-ZY-uh · from Uzziyahu · means “The Lord is my strength”
Uzziah is a Hebrew name meaning "the Lord is my strength." As a young king of Judah, he reigned for fifty-two years, initially seeking God and experiencing great prosperity, military victories, and agricultural success. His story is a poignant reminder of the importance of remaining humble before God.
“As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success.”
The story behind the name
Uzziah was only sixteen years old when the people of Judah made him king. Guided by the prophet Zechariah, he sought the Lord and was blessed with extraordinary success in building cities, planting vineyards, and training a powerful army. During this time, he became famous across the region as God helped him against Judah's enemies.
However, after Uzziah became powerful, pride took root in his heart and led to his downfall. He entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar, a duty reserved strictly for the priests. Despite the warnings of eighty brave priests, he refused to stop and was immediately struck with leprosy.
Uzziah spent his remaining days living in isolation, reflecting on the holiness of God. A boy named Uzziah carries a name of great power, reminding us that true strength is only sustained by humility and reverence. His life teaches that seeking God is the source of all lasting success.
