Juan
WAHN · means “The Lord is gracious”
Juan is the Spanish form of John, meaning "the Lord is gracious." It is not itself the spelling used in most English Bibles, but it carries forward the name shared by John the Baptist and John the apostle, two of the most significant figures in the New Testament.
“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
The story behind the name
Juan has been one of the most common names across the Spanish-speaking world for centuries, and it remains widely familiar in the United States, carried by generations who trace it straight back to John.
John the apostle was among Jesus' closest followers, described in his own Gospel as "the disciple whom Jesus loved" (John 21:20). He stood at the foot of the cross when most others had fled, and Jesus entrusted His own mother into John's care (John 19:26-27).
John later wrote a Gospel, three letters, and Revelation, closing his first letter with words that summarize his whole ministry: "God is love" (1 John 4:8). A son named Juan carries the name of the disciple known best for love, both received and given.
A blessing to pray over Juan
Lord, let this son know he is loved by You as John was, and give him a heart quick to love others in return. Keep him close to You all his life. Amen.
