Lot
LAHT · means “Veil”
Lot is a Hebrew name meaning "veil" or "covering." He was the nephew of Abraham who journeyed to the Promised Land, chose to settle in the Jordan valley, and was later rescued from the destruction of Sodom. His story is a poignant testament to God's mercy and deliverance.
“Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.”
The story behind the name
Lot accompanied his uncle Abraham from Ur to Haran, and finally into the land of Canaan (Genesis 12). When their herds grew too large to share the land, Abraham generously offered Lot first choice of where to settle. Lot chose the fertile Jordan plain, pitching his tents near the city of Sodom.
Living in Sodom brought significant trials, but God showed great mercy to Lot. When Sodom was captured, Abraham led a rescue mission to save him, and later, angels hand-delivered Lot and his family from the city's fiery destruction (Genesis 19). The New Testament refers to him as a righteous man who was distressed by the sin around him.
The name Lot teaches about the grace of God that covers and protects us even when we make short-sighted choices. It is a powerful reminder that God knows how to rescue the godly from trials. A boy with this name is covered by the protecting hand of the Savior.
