Miguel
mee-GEL · means “Who is like God?”
Miguel is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Michael, meaning "who is like God?" It is not itself a name in Scripture, but it carries forward the archangel Michael's name and legacy, the great prince described in Daniel and Revelation who fights on behalf of God's people.
“Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.”
The story behind the name
Miguel has long been one of the most common names across Spain and Latin America, and it has grown steadily familiar in the United States as well, carried by generations of families who trace it straight back to Michael.
Michael appears in Daniel as "one of the chief princes," sent to help in the midst of a great spiritual struggle (Daniel 10:13), and later as the great prince "who protects your people" in the last days (Daniel 12:1). His very name is a question meant to be answered: who is like God? No one.
In Revelation, Michael leads heaven's armies against the dragon and wins (Revelation 12:7-8). A son named Miguel carries that same bold confidence, that no power, however fearsome, stands equal to the God who fights for His own.
A blessing to pray over Miguel
Lord, may this son know that no one compares to You. Give him Michael's courage to stand firm and his readiness to fight for what is right. Amen.
