Oded

OH-ded · means Restorer, encourager

Oded is a Hebrew name meaning restorer or encourager. In the Old Testament, Oded is a courageous prophet of God in Samaria who confronts the victorious army of Israel and convinces them to release their Judean captives. His name represents restoration, compassionate advocacy, and speaking truth in love.

Now listen to me! Send back your fellow Israelites you have taken as prisoners, for the Lord's fierce anger rests on you.
2 Chronicles 28:11 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Oded appears as a prophet of the Lord in Samaria during a period of conflict between the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. The army of Israel had won a massive victory, capturing two hundred thousand women and children from Judah to make them slaves. Oded goes out to meet the returning army, confronting them with bold truth.

He explains to the soldiers that while God allowed them to win because of Judah's sins, they had gone too far, slaughtering their brothers in a rage that reached to heaven. Oded warns them of God's fierce anger and demands that they release the captives immediately. His powerful appeal touches the hearts of the military leaders.

The leaders not only free the captives but also clothe, feed, and return them safely to their homes in Jericho. Oded's courageous intervention prevented a terrible injustice and restored peace between divided brothers. A boy named Oded carries a legacy of restoration, standing up for the vulnerable, and advocating for mercy.
