Shemaiah
sheh-MAY-yuh · means “Whom Yahweh has heard”
Shemaiah is a Hebrew name meaning whom Yahweh has heard. In the Old Testament, Shemaiah is a bold prophet of God who prevents a civil war in Israel by delivering God's command to King Rehoboam to stop his attack on the northern tribes. His name represents prophetic courage, peace, and obedience.
“"This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing." So they obeyed the word of the Lord and went home again, as the Lord had ordered.”
The story behind the name
Shemaiah is introduced as a man of God when King Rehoboam gathers a massive army of one hundred eighty thousand warriors to force the rebellious northern tribes of Israel back under his control. The word of God comes to Shemaiah, commanding him to tell the king and the people not to fight their brothers, because the division of the kingdom is from the Lord.
In an extraordinary display of faith and submission, both the king and the vast army listen to Shemaiah's message and return home without a single drop of blood being shed. Through his willingness to deliver a challenging message, Shemaiah becomes an instrument of peace, averting a massive civil war. He continues to serve as a prophet, guiding the nation through turbulent times.
Years later, when King Shishak of Egypt invades Judah, Shemaiah delivers another message of repentance, leading the leaders of Israel to humble themselves before God. Because of their humility, God promises not to destroy them completely. A boy named Shemaiah carries a legacy of listening to God's voice, speaking truth to power, and promoting peace.
