Onesimus
oh-NESS-ih-mus · means “Useful, profitable”
Onesimus is a Greek name meaning "useful" or "profitable." He was an enslaved man who ran away from his master Philemon, met Paul in prison, and became a believer, prompting Paul's short, moving letter to Philemon asking that Onesimus be welcomed back as a beloved brother rather than punished as a runaway.
“Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.”
The story behind the name
Onesimus had been enslaved to Philemon, a believer in Colossae, and at some point fled, likely to Rome, where he crossed paths with Paul during Paul's imprisonment. Somewhere in that unlikely meeting, Onesimus came to faith in Christ, and Paul grew to love him as a son (Philemon 1:10).
Paul sent Onesimus back to Philemon carrying a letter unlike almost anything else in the New Testament, a personal appeal rather than a command. Paul plays gently on the meaning of his name: "Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me" (Philemon 1:11).
Paul asks Philemon to receive Onesimus no longer as a slave but as a dear brother, even offering to repay any debt himself. The letter never forces the issue by decree, but it plants the seeds of a gospel that makes slave and master brothers in Christ. A boy named Onesimus carries a name that means useful, and a story of how grace can completely remake a life once thought useless.
A blessing to pray over Onesimus
Lord, whatever this son's past or struggles may be, may Your grace make him truly useful for Your good purposes. Give him a new name and a new family in Christ, just as Onesimus received. Amen.
