Philemon
fy-LEE-mun · means “Affectionate, loving”
Philemon is a Greek name meaning "affectionate" or "loving." He was a believer in Colossae whose home hosted a church, and the recipient of Paul's short, personal letter asking him to forgive and welcome back his runaway slave Onesimus as a brother in Christ, a request that gently confronted a culture built on slavery.
“I appeal to you on the basis of love.”
The story behind the name
Philemon was a wealthy and respected believer in Colossae, well known for his love and faith toward the Lord Jesus and for refreshing the hearts of the Lord's people (Philemon 1:5-7). His home was large enough to host a church gathering.
When his slave Onesimus ran away and later became a Christian under Paul's ministry, Paul wrote Philemon a personal letter unlike any command, appealing to him on the basis of love rather than authority, and asking him to receive Onesimus back not as property but as a dear brother (Philemon 1:8-17).
Paul even offered to repay anything Onesimus owed, while reminding Philemon that he owed Paul his very life in the faith. The letter never tells us how Philemon responded, but its inclusion in Scripture suggests it worked, and it planted a seed that would one day help topple the very idea of slavery. A boy named Philemon carries a name of affection, tied to a story about what love asks of us when grace demands more than convenience.
