Rhoda

ROH-duh · means Rose

Rhoda is a Greek name meaning "rose." In the Book of Acts, Rhoda was a young servant girl who answered the door when the apostle Peter was miraculously released from prison. Her joyful reaction and persistence are celebrated in one of Scripture's most memorable stories of answered prayer.

When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, "Peter is at the door!"
Acts 12:14 (NIV)

The story behind the name

While the apostle Peter was imprisoned by King Herod, the early church gathered at the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark, to pray fervently for his release. When an angel miraculously freed Peter, he went straight to the house where they were praying and knocked on the outer entrance. A young servant girl named Rhoda went to answer the door.

Upon recognizing Peter's voice, Rhoda was so overjoyed that instead of opening the door, she ran back inside to tell the others. The praying believers did not believe her at first, telling her she was out of her mind and that it must be his angel. However, Rhoda insisted that Peter was indeed standing at the door, refusing to back down until they went and saw for themselves.

When they finally opened the door and saw Peter, they were amazed, realizing that God had answered their prayers before they even finished asking. Rhoda's persistent, joyful witness serves as a delightful reminder that God hears and answers our prayers in surprising ways. A daughter named Rhoda carries a name of beauty and a story of energetic, persistent faith.
