Tabitha is an Aramaic name meaning "gazelle," also known by the Greek equivalent Dorcas. A disciple in Joppa known for her good works and generosity to the poor, Tabitha died and was miraculously raised back to life through the prayers of the apostle Peter (Acts 9:36-41).

The story behind the name

Tabitha lived in Joppa and was known throughout the community as a disciple always doing good and helping the poor, particularly through making clothing for widows in need (Acts 9:36, 39). Her generosity had touched many lives in tangible, practical ways.

When Tabitha became sick and died, the believers in Joppa sent for Peter, who was nearby in Lydda. The widows she had helped gathered around, weeping and showing Peter the clothes Tabitha had made while she was still with them.

Peter sent everyone out of the room, knelt down and prayed, then turned to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up" (Acts 9:40). She opened her eyes and sat up, alive again, and news of the miracle spread throughout Joppa, leading many to believe in the Lord. A daughter named Tabitha carries a name of practical love, generosity that leaves a lasting mark on a community.
