Seraphina means "fiery" or "burning one," drawn from the seraphim, the flaming heavenly beings who surround God's throne in Isaiah's vision of worship in heaven. It is not itself a personal name in Scripture, but it is built directly from that vivid, awe-filled image of creatures who cry out in ceaseless praise.

The story behind the name

Seraphina has long been used quietly across Italy and has grown noticeably more popular in the United States in recent years, drawn along by its elegant sound and striking biblical image.

The prophet Isaiah described a vision of the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, with seraphim above Him, each with six wings, calling out to one another, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory" (Isaiah 6:2-3). The sound of their voices was so powerful it shook the temple's doorposts.

Overwhelmed by his own unworthiness in that moment, Isaiah cried out, and one of the seraphim touched his lips with a live coal from the altar, declaring his guilt taken away (Isaiah 6:5-7). Isaiah then answered God's call, saying, "Here am I. Send me!" (Isaiah 6:8). A daughter named Seraphina carries that same fiery picture of holiness and a heart made ready to answer God's call.
