Huldah

HUL-duh · from Chuldah · means Weasel, or one who endures

Huldah is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as "weasel" in its literal root, though her story shows enduring, respected authority. She was a prophetess consulted by King Josiah's officials to confirm the Book of the Law found in the temple, and her word shaped one of Israel's greatest reforms (2 Kings 22).

She said to them, "This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me."
2 Kings 22:15 (NIV)

The story behind the name

When workers repairing the temple found the Book of the Law, King Josiah tore his robes in grief, realizing how far the nation had drifted from God's commands. He sent his officials to seek the Lord's guidance about what should be done.

They went straight to Huldah the prophetess, who lived in Jerusalem, and she spoke with full prophetic authority, confirming that the judgments written in the book were true and would come to pass, while also promising Josiah personally that he would be spared from seeing the coming disaster (2 Kings 22:14-20).

Huldah's word set Josiah's sweeping reforms in motion, reforms that turned the nation back to God for a season. A daughter named Huldah carries a name for wisdom trusted at the highest levels, and a life used to call others back to what is true.
