Jeshua
JESH-oo-uh · means “Yahweh is salvation”
Jeshua is a Hebrew name meaning Yahweh is salvation. As the high priest who returned with Zerubbabel after the exile, Jeshua was instrumental in restoring worship and rebuilding the altar. His name points forward to Jesus, the ultimate High Priest, who brings eternal salvation to His people.
“Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, in accordance with what is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.”
The story behind the name
Jeshua served as the high priest during the critical period when the Jewish exiles returned to Jerusalem from Babylon. Alongside governor Zerubbabel, he undertook the urgent task of rebuilding the altar of God to resume daily sacrifices. His leadership established a foundation of worship before the temple itself was constructed.
Despite facing fear of the surrounding peoples, Jeshua stood firm in his duty to minister to God and the community. The prophet Zechariah saw a vision of Jeshua clothed in filthy rags, representing the people's sins, which God replaced with clean garments of grace. This symbolic event prefigured the cleansing work of the Messiah.
Jeshua's life demonstrates the vital role of spiritual leadership and dedication in times of rebuilding. He showed that worship must be the primary foundation of any new endeavor. Choosing this name honors a legacy of restoration, priestly devotion, and active faith.
