Seth
SETH · from Shet · means “Appointed, granted”
Seth is a Hebrew name meaning "appointed" or "granted," spoken by Eve after the loss of her sons Abel and Cain, when she said God had granted her another child in Abel's place (Genesis 4:25). Seth became the line through which Scripture traces the godly generations leading eventually to Noah.
“Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."”
The story behind the name
Seth was born to Adam and Eve after Cain killed his brother Abel, and Eve named him Seth, saying God had granted her another child in Abel's place (Genesis 4:25). In a family marked by grief and violence, Seth's birth was a small, quiet sign of God's continuing care.
Scripture notes that it was in the days of Seth's son Enosh that people began to call on the name of the Lord (Genesis 4:26), suggesting Seth's line kept alive the worship of the true God. Genesis 5 traces the generations from Seth all the way to Noah, the man through whom humanity would be preserved.
Though the Bible tells us little else about Seth directly, his place in the genealogy is significant, a bridge between the tragedy of Cain and Abel and the eventual hope of Noah. A boy named Seth carries a name of God's quiet provision after loss.
A blessing to pray over Seth
Father, be this son's quiet provision the way You were for Seth, granting hope after hardship. May his life carry forward the worship of Your name. Amen.
