Shem
SHEM · means “Name, renown, reputation”
Shem is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as meaning name or renown. As the eldest son of Noah, Shem became the ancestor of the Semitic peoples, including Abraham and ultimately Jesus Christ. His name carries a strong legacy of honor, covenant blessing, and faithfulness to God during a time of great global change.
“He also said, 'Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem.'”
The story behind the name
Shem was one of the eight people saved aboard the ark during the great flood that swept over the ancient world. Along with his father Noah and his brothers, Shem helped rebuild society in obedience to God's command. His quiet faith during the world's destruction set a foundation for his family's future.
Following the flood, Shem showed deep respect for his father by covering his nakedness when Noah lay exposed in his tent. For this act of honor, Noah pronounced a special covenant blessing over Shem and his descendants. This blessing established Shem's lineage as the line through which God's promises would unfold.
In the biblical genealogy, Shem's descendants include Abraham, David, and eventually the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Through Shem, the covenant promise of salvation was preserved and passed down through generations. A boy named Shem inherits a rich spiritual legacy of covenant promise and honoring family.
