Acts 20:4 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Trophimus was a Gentile Christian from the city of Ephesus who became a close companion of the apostle Paul. He was one of the delegates chosen to accompany Paul as he carried a collection of financial aid to the poor believers in Jerusalem. This mission was a powerful symbol of unity between Gentile and Jewish Christians.

While in Jerusalem, Trophimus was seen in the city with Paul, which sparked a massive riot when accusers falsely claimed Paul had brought a Gentile into the temple. Despite the danger and controversy that followed, Trophimus remained a loyal friend and helper. His devotion to the gospel was tested by persecution and hardship.

Years later, Paul mentions that he had to leave Trophimus behind in Miletus because he fell ill during their travels. This brief mention shows the tender, human reality of the early missionaries who cared deeply for one another's well-being. A boy named Trophimus carries a name that speaks of nurture, loyalty, and Christian fellowship.
