Eutychus
YOO-tih-kus · means “Fortunate, well-fated”
Eutychus is a Greek name meaning fortunate or well-fated. In the New Testament, Eutychus is a young man in Troas who falls asleep during a long sermon by the apostle Paul, falls from a third story window, and is miraculously restored to life. His name represents God's mercy, grace, and life-giving power.
“The people took the young man home alive and were greatly comforted.”
The story behind the name
Eutychus attends an evening gathering of believers in a crowded, brightly lit third-story room in Troas. As the apostle Paul speaks on past midnight, the young man sits in a window and grows increasingly sleepy. Overcome by sleep, he falls out of the window to the ground below and is picked up dead.
Paul immediately goes down, throws himself on the youth, and embraces him, telling the anxious crowd not to be alarmed because the boy is alive. Eutychus is miraculously brought back to life through the power of God working through Paul. The believers are deeply comforted and encouraged by this visible display of resurrection power.
The restoration of Eutychus brought great joy and peace to the early church before Paul's departure. His story reminds us that God's grace reaches us even in our weakness and physical exhaustion. A child named Eutychus carries a name that celebrates God's power to restore life and bring hope in the midst of tragedy.
