Joelle

joh-EL · means The LORD is God

Joelle is the feminine form of Joel, meaning "the LORD is God." It is not itself a scriptural name, but it derives from the prophet Joel, whose short book calls Israel to repentance and promises a day when God will "pour out my Spirit on all people."

And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
Joel 2:28 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Joelle has quietly grown in use across English-speaking countries over the past few decades, valued as a graceful, less common alternative to more familiar names, while still carrying a clear biblical root.

Joel wrote during a devastating locust plague, using the disaster to call the nation back to genuine repentance: "Rend your heart and not your garments" (Joel 2:13). His message moved from judgment to restoration, promising that God would repay the years the locusts had eaten.

Joel's most famous words look forward to a day of outpouring: "I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy" (Joel 2:28), a promise Peter later declared fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 2). A daughter named Joelle carries a name of hope for restoration and a Spirit poured out generously.

A blessing to pray over Joelle

Lord, pour out Your Spirit on this daughter's life just as You promised through Joel. Restore whatever seasons feel lost, and give her a hope that looks forward, not back. Amen.
