Michal

MEE-kal · from Mikhal · means Who is like God

Michal is a Hebrew name meaning "who is like God." She was King Saul's daughter who loved David and risked her own safety to save his life, though her story later turns sorrowful as her marriage grew distant and her heart hardened toward David's worship. Her life is honest about love's cost.

Now Michal daughter of Saul was in love with David.
1 Samuel 18:20 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Michal was the daughter of King Saul, and Scripture tells us plainly that she loved David (1 Samuel 18:20). When Saul's jealousy turned murderous, Michal helped David escape through a window, risking her father's fury to save the man she loved (1 Samuel 19:11-17).

Their story does not end simply. Saul gave Michal to another man during David's exile, and though David later reclaimed her as his wife, the marriage that follows in Scripture is marked by distance rather than warmth. When David danced before the ark with unrestrained joy, Michal watched from a window and despised him in her heart (2 Samuel 6:16).

Michal's story is told honestly, without pretending love and loyalty always end in gladness. A daughter named Michal carries a name that means who is like God, a reminder that even in difficult and unresolved chapters, God remains faithful and present.

A blessing to pray over Michal

Lord, give this daughter a brave and loyal heart, and heal whatever grows hard or bitter inside her. May she find lasting joy in worshiping You freely, without reservation. Amen.
